When someone dies

A simple guide to the first few days. Choose the situation closest to yours.

  1. Call their GP or 111

If the death was expected, the GP or an out-of-hours doctor will confirm it. If it was unexpected, call 999.

  2. Call us, day or night

Once the death has been confirmed, call us on 01632 960 190. We can come within the hour, or wait until you're ready.

  3. Register the death

The medical certificate goes to the register office. Register within 5 days in England and Wales. We'll help you book it.

  4. Arrange the funeral

There's no rush. We'll meet you at home or here, and go through the options and costs.

You don't need to decide anything tonight. If you're unsure what to do, call us on 01632 960 190 and we'll talk you through it.

How soon does the funeral need to happen?

There's no legal deadline. Most funerals take place two to three weeks after the death, depending on crematorium availability.

Can we see them before the funeral?

Yes. Our chapel of rest is open by appointment, including evenings and weekends.

What if we can't afford a funeral?

Talk to us. Direct cremation starts at £1,395, and you may be eligible for a Funeral Expenses Payment from the DWP.

Do we have to use a church?

No. Services can be at the crematorium, a village hall, a garden or anywhere meaningful, religious or not.
